Overnight charging strategies for electric bus fleets

Scheduling and load management techniques that keep depot electricity bills in check.

A bus depot charging forty vehicles at once overnight can look, from the utility's meter, like a small factory switching on instantly. Managing that load is as much a scheduling problem as an electrical one.

The problem with charging everything at once

Plugging in an entire fleet the moment the last bus returns to the depot creates a demand spike that drives up utility charges and can exceed what the site's electrical service was ever designed to handle.

Staggering charging start times based on each bus's first departure the next morning smooths that spike into a manageable overnight curve, without any vehicle missing its required state of charge.

The goal overnight isn't to charge every bus as fast as possible — it's to have every bus ready exactly when its route needs it.

Four levers that shape an overnight charging plan

  • Departure-based prioritization — charging the earliest-departing buses first, not whichever plugged in first.
  • Demand capping — software limits on total simultaneous draw, keeping the site under its utility service limit.
  • Off-peak alignment — shifting non-urgent charging into the utility's lowest-cost overnight window.
  • State-of-charge targets — charging to the range a route actually needs, not always to 100%.

What well-managed depots have in common

The depots with the lowest electricity bills aren't necessarily the ones with the newest chargers — they're the ones running scheduling software that treats every bus's route as an input, not just its battery level.

That approach routinely allows a depot to run its full fleet on a service size that would otherwise only support a fraction of it charging simultaneously.

Electrifying a bus fleet is a hardware decision. Running it affordably every single night is a scheduling one.
