OCPP 2.0.1: what the new standard means for operators
The latest EV charging protocol brings better security, smarter sessions, and remote diagnostics.

OCPP is the protocol that lets charge points talk to the back-office software managing them — and the jump to version 2.0.1 is the biggest change the standard has seen since it was introduced.
What's actually new
Security gets a substantial upgrade, with TLS 1.3 and certificate-based authentication replacing the weaker mechanisms in earlier versions — closing gaps that had become a real concern as public charging networks scaled.
Session management is also far more flexible, supporting features like smart charging profiles and reservation handling natively, instead of requiring vendor-specific workarounds bolted on top of the protocol.
A protocol upgrade doesn't sound exciting until you realize it's the difference between remotely diagnosing a fault and sending a technician to guess.
Four practical improvements operators will notice
- Stronger security — certificate-based authentication closes vulnerabilities present in earlier protocol versions.
- Native smart charging — load management built into the standard rather than proprietary extensions.
- Better diagnostics — richer remote monitoring data, cutting the number of truck rolls needed to resolve issues.
- Device management — standardized firmware updates and configuration across a mixed-vendor charger fleet.
What operators should do now
Not every existing charge point can be upgraded via firmware — some hardware generations will need replacement to support 2.0.1, making an inventory audit the sensible first step before committing to a network-wide migration.
For new installations, specifying 2.0.1 compatibility from day one avoids the exact fragmentation this upgrade cycle is meant to fix — running mismatched protocol versions across a growing charger fleet.
Protocols are invisible right up until they determine whether your network can talk to next year's chargers. 2.0.1 is worth getting ahead of, not catching up to.
